The "Science" Behind Essential Oils

There are always gonna be haters out there. I wasted an hour engrossed in an article meant to debunk essential oil use and basically call all of us "users" brainwashed monkeys who are wasting our money. Their main premise was that there is no science to back up these claims.

Number one, I am a follower of Christ, so am used to being accused often of being brainwashed! Number two, the premise of lack of science is just ridiculous, essential oils are chemistry! Number three, pardon me, but "science" is what has gotten most of us in trouble. Science a few decades ago postulated that margarine and Crisco were better for us than butter and lard. So people jumped on board and abandoned that which had been working for years in favor of these new "scientifically created" counterfeits. We, the people, became the Guinea pigs on that one and look at us now! Additionally, lawyers have made a pretty penny off of failed attempts by science to cure us from what ails us. I feel a lot better about being a trial subject for peppermint oil than for Ritalin, and that is true especially where my children are concerned.

So, let's pick on the evil essential oil. Here are some of the comments in the article:

How dare we take them internally.
Or put them on the skin neat.
It is ludicrous and dangerous and besides, science has yet to prove that it is helpful in any way. People can say what they want about how great they work. If science doesn't say it, I won't believe it.

I recently attended and essential oils conference in Salt Lake City. I had no idea what to expect. I for sure did not expect that one out of every three lectures would be about science. I thought by the time I left, my brain would explode. It was fascinating and thrilling and for this gal who hasn't had a science class in nearly 20 years, exhausting. But there is no science behind essential oils!

One argument against the viability of essential oils as "medicine" is that there is more anecdotal evidence than scientific.  Many are uncomfortable using a product based on testimonials. I was surrounded by 12,000 people at the conference who were there because oils work. Period! Every single person there found that the quality of their life, health, emotions, and even finances had improved thanks to the pioneers who have brought essential oils back into the forefront. And that was just a small sampling of all the people, worldwide, who have turned to essential oils as a viable way to improve health.

Studies are being done everyday on the potency and power of essential oils. Not all of them are easy to find, but if you go to PubMed (on a day in which the government is not shut down), and type in essential oils, you will be surprised how many studies come up. I found 12,122 the last time I looked. Wow, that is a lot of studies regarding essential oils. I read a few. Science is backing up what us users already know. Essential oils have amazing potential, and research is recently being demanded. We have barely scratched the surface. Another resource is Aromatic Science. (But there is no science behind essential oils.)

Science is wonderful. It really is! We are all blessed for the efforts of those who work tirelessly to learn what is good for us.  But it is just an educated guess, followed by trial and error. Everyone is just experimenting. Science is throwing out a hypothesis, gathering information and making an educated guess as to what will happen. Further, and most unfortunately, money tends to skew science to say whatever one wants it to. I do not need a scientific study to tell me that eucalyptus oil works! EVERY. SINGLE. TIME!

We are smarter than we give ourselves credit for. No one knows our own body better than we do. NO ONE! Stop for a bit and listen to it. Nourish it. Honor it. Own it. Empower it to do what it was created to do. I for one am completely comfortable and confident in Mother Nature, healing Mother Nature. Nature's medicine comes from the greatest scientist ever! I know Him! Do you?

  4. Those are some good points you make... that those arguing against things like essential oils argue for other things that are potentially much more dangerous. That is exciting about the oil that may help kill cancer cells!! And btw, the lemongrass I had gotten from you indeed works for headaches! It's great to have, as I really try not to take any Tylenol or ibuprofen.

    1. So glad to hear that Becca. I know that essential oils work, but I am still always amazed when I hear people talk about how well!

  5. Hi Janine. Hopping over from Let's Get Real hop. Boy, has it been a week! I love your new header. It looks fantastic. I do not know much about essential oils. I would be interested to know more. Any idea about how processed these are? I do believe that modern medicine is designed to take care of us when we are sick, but has no idea how to keep us healthy. Food is powerful medicine!

  7. Thanks for sharing on Tuesdays With a Twist, I for one have no faith in the scientific field which can be bought so easy. I for one would rather listen to the testimonies of those who have used God's medicine, and use that verses man made junk.
